45nm
Our latest processors are just 45-billionths of a metre wide. You could lay over 2000 of our transistor gates side-by-side and almost equal the diameter of a strand of human hair. With the use of hafnium oxide replacing silicon dioxide (in use since the 1960s) the new transistors leak less energy, produce less heat and switch faster.
32nm
It’s another world first. Intel unveiled its 32nm logic process with functional SRAM in 2007, and is on track for production in 2009. With transistors so small that more than 4 million of them could fit on the full stop at the end of this sentence, Moore’s Law has again proved a point - one that apparently can accommodate a lot of transistors.
